Mobile website tips

15 DECEMBER 2009

It's not enough to simply have a website adapted to mobile phones: You must make sure it will target your audiance correctly. Future and current mobile website owners should consider these tips when dealing with their mobile sites:

  1. Simple Mobile Navigation
Navigation on a mobile website should be straightforward and concise. The website should not overload the subnavigation and should remain as simple as possible so the users dont get confused on their relatively small cellphone screens. To see an example of a simple mobile website, check out this link at www.dreamsnfx.mobi.

  2. Mobile Functionality
As much as possible, try to avoid using programs such as flash, Javscript, ajax, or other advanced technologies. The reason is that mobiles and smartphones are not currently technologically advanced enough to do so.Your best bet is to use xhtml tagsand css. Always make sure that the most important content is a the top of your cellphone screen.

  3. Images
If you use images, make sure they are the right size (dimension and file size). Since cellphones allow for less have data transfers, your image should emphasize your content and not just merely decorate it.

  4. Test your Mobile site
Make sure your mobile website works correctly on the most used phones such as the iphone and the blackberry. http://ready.mobi is website that enables you to test your mobile website.
Also, make sure that when you type your regular website URL on a phone, its automatically redirects it to the mobile website version.

  5. Beware of freebies
Last but not least, be weary of websites that proclaim they will create a free mobile website for you. Oftentimes, they add extra codes on your mobile page and add their footer for advertising.
